This is what a nine year old can make all by herself out of sheer boredom on a lazy weekend.

A mosaic of love…

diy holiday wrap

Thanks to a little dollar store paint and brown shipping paper, we have been able to turn a fun weekend craft project into something special. There’s nothing quite like original wrapping paper.

make your own cereal

You will need:

  • an old empty cereal box
  • wrapping paper (preferably from your brother’s birthday that just passed)
  • pencil, colours and tape
  • a 7 year old with a creative imagination

This is my youngest’s latest creation. She has a fettish for boxes that are ready for recycling. At first she used to ask for help. Finding no willing participants, she has now taken matters into her own hands. I like an independent child. Especially one who can make her own cereal.  The dog reference is simply a poke at her mother and father who refuse to entertain the thought of a family pet.

all you need is

Today is my birthday. Bastille Day. Lucky me. Nothing beats a handmade card, especially one like this. My youngest made it for me back in Toronto and carefully snuck it into her suitcase. The necklace my oldest made from bottle glass she collected from the beach here in Barbados.

fun with construction paper (part 2)

Meet the artist below. She is the little person on the left wearing the hat. My camera work really does not do justice to how beautiful this is. My daughter’s attention to detail is remarkable. As she brought it home from school, she says: “I forgot to give Daddy a hand”.  She makes me smile.

fun with construction paper (part 1)

In five more days we will be officially on vacation in Barbados. My younger daughter is so excited she came home on Friday with this. I love the detail she added with the construction paper. Anyone who knows my daughter will attest to the fact that it makes perfect sense that she made herself with armbands swimming in the water. She is a bit ‘timid’ about water. It also makes sense for me to be wearing a one piece swimsuit. My daughter is very observant. In part 2, I will share my daughter’s second masterpiece – a ‘sparkling’ family portrait that is now gracing our mantle.

loopylocks loves… sascalia

Category:  art

Sascalia’s art on Etsy is unique, endearing and whimsical. Creating art in her studio and selling internationally online, Sascalia offers original artwork, prints in various sizes, as well as mounted on wood. At first I was drawn to the “Sisters” print because I have two daughters and I loved the feeling captured in the piece. If only they too were angels, or fairies. Then I found “Glow”. Being that I love portraits of women, I wanted to share them both. Her work is utterly delightful. That makes Sascalia truly an inspiration to me.

Artist words:

“I am a self taught mixed media artist. I was born and grew up in rural France but currently live in the U.K. with my husband and three children.”

Category:  art

This “Character in Vancouver” print on Etsy immediately took me back to the chattel houses that I grew up loving in Barbados. Born and raised in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Gigi Hoeller uses a mixed media technique which combines oil and water to create this exquisite series of art. The effect is as charming as her subject matter. That makes this Universal Traveller truly an inspiration.

Artist words:

“Vancouver has some of the most beautiful heritage homes with stunning color combinations. I meandered through Kitsilano and took tons of pictures, came home and painted the beauty of them.”

Gigi’s work also encompasses some amazing oil pastels she paints entirely with her fingers of brightly coloured flowers. They simply beg to be adorned and may be found in Gigi’s other Etsy shop,  Gigi Butterfly. In 2005, Gigi’s created a series of Hibiscus flowers (also native to Barbados) which are featured on some postage stamps for the Marshall Islands. If Gigi’s work does not speak for itself, her mission certainly does: the proceeds of her sales from both shops go towards feeding and rescuing dogs.

handmade at The Gladstone Hotel

Made a special trip to The Gladstone Hotel in Toronto on Saturday, May 16, with my husband to attend A Spring Handmade Market which featured several outstanding Etsy sellers. My first opportunity to meet other fellow Etsians and see their incredible work in 3-D. It was a great experience to be able to look at the amazing handmade pieces in the flesh… as opposed to the images on their Etsy shops from the isolated comfort of my laptop. Handmade stuff is so cool. Inspiring in so many ways. From the way each artist presented their work, to the sparkles in their eyes when I asked them questions about their craft and how much they enjoyed being a party of Etsy.  Being new to Etsy, I was a bit shy to share that I too was an Etsian with my own shop. Honestly, I did not want to steal anything away from their limelight which they so much deserved. I am so proud to be a part of this handmade movement.

I would like to say a special thanks to Jen* of Urban Fusions, who was showcasing her unique glass work. I had the honour of meeting her and purchased this pendant. It now graces my neck and my kids think it is the coolest thing ever.

This photo was taken after the show from the Ballroom Cafe as we sipped beer and chatted about the great stuff we had just seen. Our first trip “finally” to this magical place and certainly not our last. I hope they do this show again next year. I have a funny feeling the Gladstone will need a bigger room!
